When you’re first teaching a child to fish, you will have to confront a formidable foe: fishing line. That long, thin, inconspicuous thread plays an essential role within the fishing process, of course, but it can also be immensely frustrating. Try as you might to avoid it, your child’s fishing line will inevitably end up tangled at some point. One way or another, you’ll end up picking at knots, wasting valuable time, and perhaps even chopping out the tangles with scissors and replacing the line entirely. To help you eliminate those troublesome tangles from your fishing trips, today we’re discussing how to prevent tangled fishing line. At least one of our tips is sure to help!
How to Prevent Tangled Fishing Line
Teach Your Child to Be Careful and Aware
In the excitement of learning to fish, children often forget to cast their rod carefully and remain aware of their surroundings. Teach your child to aim well, to avoid casting near another angler’s line, and to avoid letting out too much line at once.
Load the Line Correctly
If you throw your line onto the reel and make a mess of the eyes and the hook, don’t be surprised when the line tangles up. Use tight and secure knots, place the spool on the floor with the label facing up, keep the line lightly taut as you reel it up, and check that the line isn’t twisting. In addition, be sure that you aren’t overfilling it. If you aren’t sure how to load a line properly, stop by your local fishing supply store and ask one of the employees for a quick lesson.
Use Quality Fishing Line.
Look for a quality fishing line that suits your reel. Although you don’t need to shell out a lot of money or drive to a specialty shop, you do need to use the proper fishing line for your rod and reel. Consider the material and the size, and if you aren’t sure which line to choose, (again) just ask for help! You could also research your particular fishing reel online to see which brand and type of line other anglers are using with it.
Purchase a No-Tangle Fishing Pole
No-tangle fishing poles feature an in-line feed through the center of the shaft, which eliminates any obstruction between the line and the exterior of the rod. This extra protection is crucial when you’re trying to teach a young child to fish. The line won’t become tangled, your child can fish hassle-free, and you won’t have to worry about constantly untangling or replacing your child’s fishing line.
