If you’ve been fishing for most of your life, you might’ve forgotten what drew you to it in the first place. More importantly, you might not realize all the benefits you’ve gained from it. Fishing isn’t just a way to pass the time; it can help you gain valuable skills, increase your appreciation of nature, improve your overall wellbeing, and (of course) bring a smile to your face. Introducing a child to your beloved hobby will be a great joy, especially if you consider all of the benefits of fishing for kids. Scroll down to hear about a few of our favorites . . .
Benefits of Fishing for Kids
Appreciation of Nature. How often do kids these days get out in the fresh air and enjoy the great outdoors? Not often enough, I think we can all agree! So grab your boots, put on some sunscreen, and head outside. A few hours in nature can help you appreciate the beauty of our great world, and it will require a bit of exercise as well. Plus, speaking of nature . . .
Unplugging from Technology. You can’t appreciate nature and have a truly relaxing day if you’re constantly checking Facebook or playing games on your iPad. Getting children away from their computers and video games once in a while will help them see that you don’t have to stare at a screen to have fun.
Good Morals and Ethics. Fishing is a great opportunity to teach your child about certain morals and life lessons. For example: respect. Don’t crowd in if another fisherman has found a great spot. Slow down when you pass other anglers in a boat. If another fisherman is lacking bait or extra line, kindly offer him or her some of your own. Respect your environment by not littering and taking care not to spill gas in the water. Don’t wastefully discard fish or heedlessly harm them . . . These are just a few of the many lessons children can learn whilst fishing.
Balance and Coordination. Fishing requires physical and technical skills as well, including balance and coordination. When your child is a little older, you can teach them to balance a fishing rod and their tackle. You can also show them how to cast gracefully, how to successfully reel in a large fish, and how to prepare their bait and tackle.
Patience. If a fish immediately swallowed your hook each time you lowered it into the water, the sport wouldn’t be any fun! Fishing teaches children to be patient and to wait quietly for the things they want. They will also have to accept that not every fishing trip is successful (or as successful as we would like it to be). C’est la vie!
